NYC New Liberals Statement on Election Results: Time for Mamdani to Deliver, Not Perform
NEW YORK, N.Y. – While the results won’t be finalized until RCV is tabulated, it’s all but certain that Democratic voters have chosen Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani as their nominee for Mayor of New York City. The NYC New Liberals call on Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani to move beyond primary-season rhetoric and commit to a serious, solutions-oriented agenda.
We’re glad to see voters decisively reject Andrew Cuomo. New Yorkers want something better than the old playbook of ego-driven politics and transactional deals. Cuomo’s loss is a sign for Democrats nationwide: it is imperative that the pragmatic wing of the Democratic Party move beyond the perennial, unsavory leaders it repeatedly chooses in favor of a new generation of ambitious leaders who chart a path of progress and growth.
Many parts of Mamdani’s platform still deeply concern us, particularly his economically illiterate proposals like a rent freeze, fare-free buses, and a general hostility towards business. That said, we hope he continues his late embrace of the abundance agenda and stated commitment to legalizing more housing. New Yorkers need a mayor who will legalize housing, fix our permitting dysfunction, and grow the city, not one who clings to scarcity economics and performative posturing. If he campaigns and ultimately governs, in line with his late-primary campaign rhetoric on housing, he may yet prove capable of delivering real progress.
The NYC New Liberals will continue pushing for a New York that is affordable, dynamic, and built for everyone. We’ll be holding Mamdani’s feet to the fire to make sure this primary victory translates into better outcomes for New Yorkers, not just rhetoric.
